Smith, a 20-year-old defender who joined the club at 13, broke the deadlock after just seven minutes. He met a cross from Jack Turner with a powerful header to give County the lead. "It is about time that I did score, it has been a long time coming," Smith said after the match. He added, "I think that I should have scored by now, but I am pleased to score the first goal tonight as it got us going."
Ricco Diack then took over, scoring a hat-trick that included a penalty in the 55th minute after he was fouled by Tommy Havlicek. Clachnacuddin's Troy Cooper fired in a fine strike from distance in the 57th minute, but Andrew Macleod restored the three-goal cushion just seven minutes later. Josh Reid completed the scoring late on, pouncing on a rebound.
The result follows a 5-1 win in the league and maintains Ross County's unbeaten start to the League One campaign. Smith, who made his first league appearance four years ago against Rangers, will hope his cup performance earns him a starting role in that league encounter.
